Are we “urchins”?

I read an article today.

First I thought to write a fierce counter attack but I changed my mind. That wouldn’t solve anything. I know my values as well as those of my relatives and friends, that’s why I won’t take the grave and ungrounded insults included in the article against Hungarians. Calmness and tranquility is the best path to take, usually.

Let me take some corrections here:

  • Hungary gave the World much-much more than it is “advertised”. One would be amazed to know how many inventors (of our and previous ages’ widely used devices and facilities), significant scientists, artists, etc. were actually of Hungarian origin. Also, in the old days it was Hungary (beside other “border countries”) that protected Europe against certain invasions.
  • The Hungarian had nothing to do with the Hun, the two nations were not even relatives – according to history science. Mixing up the Hun and the Hungarian is a common mistake though, also seen on Cartoon Network! The name Hungarian is said to come from Onogur, a name used for referring to us well back in the past. The Hungarian name of the Hungarian is Magyar, or as we use it in plural: magyarok.

I don’t bear anyone a grudge so I don’t expect anyone to insult me. If they insult my country as a whole, they include me (and the people I care for) as well. I am not an urchin to be crushed (in the article: “slammed”) and my relatives and friends aren’t ones either.

Generalising is always dangerous, it’s a lesson for all of us to take.

Peace.
